Agronomic Crops School Slated For Aug. 4 Near Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, LOUISIANA

   The LSU AgCenter Dean Lee Research and Extension Center will open its doors to farmers, consultants and others in the agriculture industry Aug. 4 for an Agronomic Crops School.

   The event will start at 4 p.m. at the State Evacuation Shelter, located on U.S. Highway 71 adjacent to the LSU Alexandria campus. 

   Tours of the research and extension center’s nearby fields will run until 7 p.m.

   A sponsored meal will be provided.

   The AgCenter held its inaugural Agronomic Crops School last year.

   “The goal of the school is to not only provide research updates, but also encourage participants to get out in the field with scientists for up-close and hands-on observation and learning,” said Tara Smith, director of the AgCenter Central Region.

   This year’s program will include the following topics and AgCenter speakers:

   • Salvage herbicide treatments in cotton by weed scientist and Dean Lee research coordinator Daniel Stephenson.

   • Soybean fertility effects on nodulation by soybean specialist David Moseley.

   • Spray drones and remote sensing in field crops by engineer Randy Price.

   • Disease management in cotton and other field crops by plant pathologist Boyd Padgett.

   • Insect scouting and damage in field crops by entomologist James Villegas.

   • Soybean row configuration and land management by agronomist Andre Reis.
