Strong Heifer Demand At Show-Me-Select Sale Near Carthage
PATRICK DAVIS
CARTHAGE, MISSOURI
The May 20 Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Sale at Joplin Regional Stockyards had a good turnout and active bidding on most lots, according to University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist Patrick Davis. Heifer demand was strong, as shown by the 223 heifers selling for an average price of $1,913 per head.
“First-time consignors to the sale had a strong showing,” says Davis. First-time consignor Fire Sweep Simmentals, of Verona, sold the highest-priced lot, two registered Simmental heifers that sold for $3,100 per head to Ronald Beltram, of Maysville, Kentucky. This consignor also had the highest sale average, selling nine registered Simmental heifers for an average of $2,355. Another first-time consignor, J and J Farms, of Sarcoxie, sold one lot of two purebred Hereford heifers for $2,250 per head. The final first-time consignor, David and Danise Cummings, also of Sarcoxie, sold seven Angus/Sim- Angus cross heifers for an average of $1,828.
“Longtime and volume sale consignors also had a strong showing in the sale,” says Davis. Aspen Ridge LLC, of Carthage, participated in its fourth sale and had the second-highest average, selling 23 head of red Angus heifers, which were mostly red with a few blacks, for an average of $2,347. Nolan Kleiboeker Farms LLC, of Wentworth, consigned 41 head of black baldy heifers, which was the largest consignment and sold for the fourth-highest average of $2,156.
“Boulder Point Ranch of Milo, Missouri, was the volume buyer and picked up 24 head of black baldy heifers for an average price of $2,033,” says Davis. This farm’s selections came from Nolan Kleiboeker Farms and John Wheeler, Marionville.
“Buyers preferred to pay more for red/red whiteface heifers compared to black/black whiteface heifers,” says Davis. The average price of the 46 red/red whiteface heifers was $2,163 while the average price of the 177 black/black whiteface heifers was $1,848.
The next Show-Me-Select sale at Joplin Regional Stockyards will be Nov. 18. The heifers in that sale are in the process of being bred.
