Prescribed Burn Workshop To Be Held In Hammond ​

HAMMOND, LA.

   The LSU AgCenter will sponsor a prescribed burning workshop with burner certification on April 7-9 at the Hammond Research Station.

   The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 7 and 8, and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 9.

   LSU AgCenter area forester Whitney Wallace said the workshop will provide essential information for conducting prescribed burns safely and legally in timberlands. Instructors will be from the AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.

   “Topics on the first two days will include fuels, fire behavior, fire weather, fire ecology, burning techniques, smoke management, fire lane establishment and burn planning,” she said. “A field exercise with a prescribed fire will be held on the second day, depending on the weather.”

   The final day will cover the Louisiana Certified Prescribed Burner program. Attending the class, passing an exam and completing a demonstration burn are required for certification.

   “The workshop will be limited to the first 12 applicants. A long sleeve shirt, pants and closed-toed shoes are recommended for this workshop,” she said.

   The registration fee is $100 per person if received by March 31 and $150 after. The registration fee covers lunches, refreshments, handouts and supplies.

   The research station is located at 21549 Old Covington Highway.
