Friday's auction was a Special Bred Cow and Heifer sale with a nice quality offering of young bred cows 4-6 yrs in the 3rd stage selling with good demand along with three groups of bred heifers also selling with good demand in the 3rd stage. Feeder cattle were lightly tested on a light offering with many of the calves coming off cows sold earlier in the day. Slaughter cows sold mostly steady on the high dressing cows with the average dressing cows trading steady to $2.00 lower. Cattle on Feed Report was released Friday afternoon with on Feed at 102 percent; Placements at 111 percent and Marketings at 99 percent Supply included: 33 percent Feeder Cattle (33 percent Steers, 32 percent Heifers, 34 percent Bulls); 28 percent Slaughter Cattle (18 percent Steers, 72 percent Cows, 10 percent Bulls); 39 percent Replacement Cattle (76 percent Bred Cows, 9 percent Bred Heifers, 14 percent Cow-Calf Pairs). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 23 percent.

Compared to last week's lighter test, steers and heifers firm to higher undertone. Slaughter cows $2.00 lower to $2.00 higher. Slaughter bulls unevenly steady. Demand moderate to good on a heavy supply. Supply included: 88 percent Feeder Cattle (57 percent Steers, 41 percent Heifers, 1 percent Bulls); 8 percent Slaughter Cattle (82 percent Cows, 18 percent Bulls); 4 percent Replacement Cattle (75 percent Bred Cows, 25 percent Cow-Calf Pairs). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 55 percent.

Note from the Birks
Exceptional quality with 1100+ PreVac cattle in the offering. Many of the cattle were on some type of health program and those cattle fetched the most attractive prices of the day. Demand and price remained constant throughout the sale with lots of buyer activity. Increasing fed cattle prices have feedlots eager to fill pens and above normal moisture in the major grazing areas have those operations searching for lighter cattle suitable for grazing extra summer pasture and wheat later this fall. Overall market was $10 - $15 per hundred higher on all classes of cattle.
