Rice Researcher Of The Year Dr. Bobby Golden, Assistant Extension/Research Professor at Mississippi State University’s Delta Research and Extension Center, has been named the 2020 Rice Researcher of the Year at the 23rd Annual National Conservation Systems Cotton & Rice Conference, Southern Corn & Soybean Conference, Southern Precision Ag Conference and the Delta States Irrigation Conference.
Golden is elite among agronomists in the southern U.S. according to his colleagues.
“Golden has an innate ability to address problems in the complex and often abstract discipline of soil fertility in a manner that is both practical and applicable on the farm level. Golden directs an extensive rice research program at the Delta Research and Extension Center. He has spent many years assessing the implications of various amendments to fertilizer sources in an effort to increase efficiency and continues to assess phosphorus and potassium needs for multiple crops including rice, corn, cotton and soybean. Golden’s efforts in evaluating all aspects of ESN (Environmentally Smart Nitrogen) have made him one of the South’s leading authorities on its use and adaptation for the region. In recent years, Golden has accepted several graduate students in soil fertility and has been mentoring others across multiple disciplines. As a young scientist, Golden, has shown himself to be well-trained and forward-thinking in his ability to assess researchable problems.”
“Golden has presented in-service training directly to over 400 Extension Agents in his career, presented directly to over 10,000 external clienteles, received more than 10 Awards of Recognition across different States and Universities, received numerous notes of appreciation, received grant funding of almost $2 million, and published numerous refereed and in-state publications. Most recently, Golden received the Guyton Technology Award for 2019 at the Mississippi State University Extension Service Annual Conference for the development of the Crops Podcast. This weekly podcast has over 1,000 followers from more than eight states.”
“Golden is part of the Mississippi Team hosting the 2020 Rice Technical Working Group and is in charge of Local Arrangement and also Rice Culture. He represents Mississippi as part of the 2019/2021 Rice Leadership Development Program under the Rice Foundation and is managed by the USA Rice Federation. The Rice Leadership Development Program gives young men and women a comprehensive understanding of the U.S. rice industry, with an emphasis on personal development and communication training.”
“Golden’s Extension and research programs are having a positive economic impact on the agriculture industry in Mississippi and the southern U.S. A brief list of Golden’s significant contributions to agriculture include: conducts research in rice, soybean, corn and cotton with an emphasis on improved soil fertility and agronomic management. He works cooperatively with other agronomists to develop profitable production strategies for Mississippi growers. Golden provides Extension support in soil fertility and agronomy and develops educational programs for growers and Extension agents. Golden cooperates with scientists to develop state and regional management strategies in rice. He participates in competitively-funded, multi-state research projects among Midsouth states. Golden actively publishes peer-reviewed articles, Extension publications, blogs/podcasts and popular press articles. He has been featured in television/video interviews and has presented numerous professional papers.
