Short Course Analyzes Seed Specifics “From Field To Bin”
STARKVILLE, MISS.
Three years ago, participants in the Mississippi State University Seed Technology Short Course familiarized themselves with each step of a seed’s journey from bin to bag. This year, the course will focus on the same process from field to bin.
The 2019 MSU Seed Technology Short Course will be held August 13-14 at the MSU Bost Extension Center. It is hosted by the MSU Extension Service and the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station. The course theme is “From Field to Bin.”
Event organizer Daniel Chesser, an assistant professor in the MSU Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering, said seed industry professionals will also learn about various aspects of harvest and postharvest management.
“Participants will learn about harvest machinery settings and calibration, postharvest handling, principles of seed drying, bulk storage systems, postharvest storage pest management, grain bin safety and rescue techniques for grain bin entrapment,” Chesser said. “Presenters will also discuss seed certification, seed quality evaluation and testing, and state and federal laws associated with seed labeling and tracking.”
The $100 registration fee covers the short course lecture sessions, printed materials, breakfast and lunch each day, and a dinner after the first day.
