SPRINGFIELD, TENN.
Beef cattle and tobacco producers should make plans to attend the Tobacco, Beef and More Field Day hosted by the University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture. The field day takes place on Thursday, June 21, at the Highland Rim AgResearch and Education Center.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the field day assembly area off Oakland Road. Early arrivers can meet with representatives from agricultural industries and UTIA in the trade show area before the first field tours begin at 8:45 a.m.
Visitors to the field day can also help the Highland Rim AgResearch Center mark a major milestone – 75 years of exceptional research and advancement of agriculture. Since 1943, the center has been at the forefront of developing popular tobacco varieties and promoting more efficient cattle management. Learn more about the center’s history and current role in Tennessee agriculture on a special Center     Overview Tour.
Other field day tours will focus specifically on tobacco and beef production. Tobacco Tours will highlight a new dark-fired variety, as well as tobacco fertility and insecticide programs.
Beef tours will focus on calving. There will be a presentation on the effect calving difficulty has on future breeding; a presentation on dystocia management (pulling calves) and tips on managing nutrition to ensure both calf vigor and cow fertility.
The presentations will conclude at approximately 12:30 p.m.  A complimentary lunch will be served following the last tour.
The complete program schedule can be found at highlandrim.tennessee.edu .
Applicators can pick up one pesticide recertification point in Categories 1, 10 and 12 by attending Tour A (tobacco).
