Livestock and forage producers can learn about new concepts related to pasture weed control during the Kentucky Grazing Conference.
The University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service and the Kentucky Forage and Grassland Council host the annual conference. This year, organizers will offer the conference at two regional locations. On Oct. 17, the conference is at the Fayette County Extension office in Lexington. It is at the Christian County Extension office in Hopkinsville on Oct. 18. On both days, the conference is from 7:45 a.m. until 4:15 p.m. local time.
Presenters include UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment forage extension specialists, a Virginia Tech weed specialist, a Kentucky dairy and forage producer, a retired grazing specialist with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, a weed grazing advocate and industry rep resentatives. Topics include the science, theory and practice of weed grazing; emerging technologies in weed control; New Zealand perspectives; and the roles of mixed-species grazing, herbicides, and soil fertility and grazing management in an integrated weed control program.
The afternoon session in Lexington will feature the annual Kentucky Forage Spokesman Contest with the winner advancing to the national contest held in January during the American Forage and Grassland Council annual meeting. Winners of Kentucky’s contest have been very competitive on the national stage with more national winners than any other state.
Conference registration is $40 and $15 for students until Oct. 4. After that date, rates increase an additional $10. Conference participants can also add on a membership to the Kentucky Forage and Grassland Council to their conference registration for an additional $10, which is a discounted membership rate.
