Four States Cattle Conference Coming To Texarkana On Dec. 13
FAYETTEVILLE, ARK.
Area experts and producers will speak about how to best prepare cattle for the winter months and maximize profitability in an unpredictable market at the Four States Cattle Conference, Dec. 13.
Paul Beck, a professor and animal scientist at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture’s Southwest Research and Extension Center in Hope, Arkansas, will talk to producers about winter cow nutrition.
“Producers need to test their hay and forage this time of the year,” said Beck.
Warm season grasses, like bermudagrass and bahiagrass, are the main forages in southern Arkansas. These grasses are in short supply in the colder months, while cattle nutrition requirements go up at the same time. This means that producers need to focus on diet supplementation in order to ensure that their cattle’s dietary needs are met.
Beck has worked at the center for 19 years, where he conducts research on foraging systems and backgrounding diets for growing cattle and the effects of pre-finishing management on finishing performance and carcass quality. This July, he received the Animal Management Award from the American Society of Animal Science.
The conference is geared specifically toward the four state area including Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. There will be two other speakers at the event, including:
• Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University livestock market economist – Cattle Market Outlook
• Dave Lalman, Oklahoma State University Extension beef cattle specialist – Mineral Supplementation
Following the speakers, cattle producers from several states will have a panel discussion led by Ryon Walker. Walker is an assistant professor and researcher at the Louisiana State University Hill Farm Research Station in Homer, Louisiana. The panel will discuss strategies they used to improve operations.
The conference will be held at the Texas A&M University of Texarkana, University Center Building, 7101 University Ave., Texarkana, Arkansas.
Registration is $70 per couple and $45 per individual. The cost of attendance also includes a catered lunch, beverages, and snacks.
