Feedout Time

ELDON COLE

MT. VERNON, MO.
You may now enter your winter/spring steer calves in the Missouri Steer Feedout. The deadline is October 10 to register to learn how your calves perform in the feedlot and on-the-rail. Time and time again, farmers ask how to get this type of data. The answer is simple, send your entire calf crop to a feedlot, retain ownership and pay for the carcass data. The other, lower risk option is to enter at least 5 steers in the Missouri Steer Feedout.
This year the steers will be processed on November 1 at Joplin Regional and sent to a feedlot in southwest Iowa that participates in the Tri-County Steer Carcass Futurity. There is a $20 per head entry fee and all additional charges will be taken from your check after all steers in the Missouri group are sold.
If your cattle perform well, that information could help you market herd mates in the future. If they don’t perform to your expectations, that could help you make breeding and management changes. Either way feedout participation can be a win-win for you.
