91st Lawrence County Soils And Crops Conference Scheduled For Jan. 8

MT. VERNON, MO.
The 91st annual Lawrence County Soils and Crops Conference will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Southwest Research Center located at 14548 State Hwy H, southwest of Mt. Vernon, Mo.
“This long-running conference will look at researched-based solutions to address common production issues on area farms. The information will provide ‘tried and true’ management tools to support local farmers who feed the rest of us,” said Tim Schnakenberg, an agronomy specialist with University of Missouri Extension in Galena.
The planning committee, which was made up of Lawrence County farmers, has planned topics that should be of interest to both livestock and crop producers in 2015.
Topics this year will include a discussion on the latest farm bill that has changed drastically in how it supports livestock and crop producers. Brian Blount of the Farm Service Agency in Mt. Vernon will give an overview of the bill.
Dr. Bill Wiebold, state soybean specialist with MU Extension will discuss his twenty-five years of research that demonstrates why crop rotation works. Sarah Kenyon, regional agronomy specialist, will cover pasture management strategies to reduce fescue toxicity.
A meal will be provided courtesy of Mid-Missouri Bank of Mt. Vernon, Ozark Electric Cooperative, Southwest Missouri Cattlemen’s Association and the Mt. Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
There is a small charge of $5 to attend to cover program costs and attendees must preregister before Jan. 5 with the Lawrence County Extension Center. Call 417-466-3102 to reserve a meal. There is a $10 fee after the deadline. Space is limited so early registration insures a meal and a seat. ∆
