Sustainable Living Expo Being Held At Dixon Springs Agricultural Center

SIMPSON, ILL.
Back for its fourth year, the Sustainable Living Expo will once again be held at the Dixon Springs Agricultural Center on Saturday, October 25, 2014 from 9 am to 4 pm, rain or shine.  The Dixon Springs Ag Center is located at 345 State Hwy 145N, Simpson, IL  62985 in rural Pope County.  With the slogan Good Choices. Smart Living. Help Yourself., this day-long event strives to promote self-reliance and sustainability at home, within our communities, and the southern Illinois region. This event is open to the public with FREE ADMISSION.
The programming for this year’s event is focused around local foods, energy, and safety, with informative and educational presentations and demonstrations scheduled throughout the day. For those interested in Local Foods, information will be available on food preservation, aquaponics, beekeeping, vegetable gardening, small scale cattle and backyard chicken farming, edible landscaping, and much more. The Energy area will have information on interior and exterior home energy efficiency, water quality, etc., as well as an on-going demonstration utilizing the energy trailer. Within the Safety area, participants will have the opportunity to learn about farm, chainsaw, and trail safety, along with lessons learned from the Brookport tornado and SUHD medical rescue corp. As in the past, there will be a Kids Area set up with sustainable or science-based projects, as well as a tent housing local artisans displaying their many creative works, and a food court area.
The Sustainable Living Expo first began in 2010 as a project of the Shawnee Resource Conservation & Development Area. Thanks to overwhelming support and interest of the surrounding community, as well as the hard work of staff and volunteers, the event grew and gained regional attention. Featuring a new partnership with the University of Illinois Extension, the Sustainable Living Expo continues to be a one-of-a-kind “must see” event in the southern Illinois region. Please mark your calendars, bring your family and friends, and discover ways to become more efficient and self-reliant in your everyday living.
