An additional marketing opportunity for cattle producers is outlined in a new University of Missouri Extension guide, “Adding Value to Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifers Using Show-Me-Plus,” available at https://extension.missouri.edu/publications/g2094.
Show-Me-Plus is a secondary classsification within MU Extension’s Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program.
“The Show-Me-Plus secondary classification certifies that Show-Me-Select heifers are being sold with additional genomic information available to the buyer,” said Jamie Courter, MU Extension assistant professor of beef genetics extension and research.
The information is delivered in the form of either genomically enhanced expected progeny differences or commercial genomic test results. “The DNA can be taken at any time as long as we have results prior to the sale. It takes about six weeks,” Courter said.
“The value of Show-Me-Plus lies in its ability to provide insight into what cannot be seen – a heifer’s genetic potential not only for fertility but other economically important traits,” she said.
The guide explains how producers can get the most out of their investment whether selling registered or commercial heifers.
“Understanding the genetics of a potential replacement heifer provides irreplaceable information to the current or future owner,” Courter said. “Show-Me-Plus elevates the existing standard of excellence for which the Show-Me-Select brand is known.” ∆
