Compared to last week, Friday's market was lightly tested, but found itself in the grip of a winter storm moving across the Plains and Midwest with arctic type temperatures approaching demand was light to moderate. The feeder supply consisted of several lots and groups of Braunvieh cross feeders along with several smaller groups and packages all selling with a lower undertone. Slaughter steers and heifers sold steady to firm, with slaughter cows trading firm to 5.00 higher. Supply included: 76% Feeder Cattle (48% Steers, 43% Heifers, 9% Bulls); 24% Slaughter Cattle (16% Steers, 2% Heifers, 77% Cows, 6% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 33%.

Compared to Dec 19th sale 500-600 lbs heifers sold 12.00-15.00 higher, the rest of the offering sold steady to 8.00 higher. Slaughter cows and bulls sold 2.00-3.00 higher; Demand good and supply moderate. Supply included: 80% Feeder Cattle (41% Steers, 47% Heifers, 12% Bulls); 18% Slaughter Cattle (89% Cows, 11% Bulls); 2% Replacement Cattle (83% Bred Cows, 6% Bred Heifers, 11% Cow-Calf Pairs). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 35%.

Due to the weather there was too small of an offering to determine a trend. Slaughter cows sold steady to $1 higher, no slaughter bulls in the offering; Demand not determine and supply light. Supply included: 88% Feeder Cattle (56% Steers, 44% Heifers); 12% Slaughter Cattle (96% Cows, 4% Bulls). Feeder cattle supply over 600 lbs was 24%.

Slaughter steers and heifers traded 3.00-5.00 higher on high choice and 2.00-4.00 higher on low choice and selects. Holstein steers traded steady on high choice and steady on low choice and selects. Feeder steers & heifers trade was strong on medium-large 1-2 (Market quotes are on mostly unvaccinated cattle) and 5.00-10.00 higher on medium-short 2-3. Slaughter cows on a weather market traded 5.00-17.00 higher on better cows and 3.00-12.00 higher on slower cows. Slaughter bulls traded 2.00 higher.
