MU Pest Management Field Day Is July 6

Farmers can learn the latest on using drones to spray weeds and spread seed at the annual Mizzou Pest Management Field Day on Thursday, July 6, at the University of Missouri’s Bradford Research Farm near Columbia.
This year’s event includes technology and research updates that will interest those in agriculture, says MU weed scientist Kevin Bradley.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. Bradley will give an update on weed research at 8:30. After that, attendees will take a guided wagon tour of the farm to learn from MU researchers. Lunch follows at noon, after which attendees can visit research plots around the farm on their own.
As always, weed control is a high-priority topic at the field day, but there is much more, says Bradley. Specialists will discuss new herbicide resistance, weed electrocution and using drones to spray for selective weed control. They also will give updates on waterhemp resistance. New this year, MU Extension specialists will discuss the use of drones to spread cover crop seed into standing corn and soybean.
Other new topics include using deer repellents as an additive to herbicide applications as well as biological products as additives to corn and soybean. Specialists will share suggested treatments for tar spot, which began appearing in northern Missouri crops in 2022, and recent findings on using Peking soybean to control soybean cyst nematode populations.
Growers can bring crop samples for disease, insect and weed identification by Peng Tian, director of the MU Plant Diagnostic Clinic. University scientists, including Mandy Bish and new extension soybean agronomist Andre Reis, will present information to help farmers improve their operations.
