Registration open for fescue workshop

MOUNT VERNON, MISSOURI

Registration remains open for the March 23 Alliance for Grassland Renewal workshop at the University of Missouri Southwest Research Center in Mount Vernon.

The one-day workshop brings nationally known experts on toxic tall fescue to Missouri. They will tell how to renovate toxic tall fescue pastures and integrate novel fescue varieties into grazing systems, says Gene Schmitz, MU Extension field specialist in livestock.

In addition to teaching how to replace toxic tall fescue pastures, presenters will discuss the economic reasons to do so. USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service representatives will give information on cost-share programs to help with the renovation process.

Speakers include national experts on toxic tall fescue, local producers, seed company representatives and researchers. A hands-on demonstration on drill calibration will show proper setup of drills for appropriate seeding rate, seed depth and seed-soil contact.

Topics include fescue toxicosis symptoms and causes; economics; establishment and first-year management; seed and endophyte testing; transitioning from toxic fescue; products; incentives and cost-share programs; and a producer panel.
