Prescribed Burn Workshop Set For Nov. 9-11 In Hammond

   The LSU AgCenter will hold a prescribed burn workshop at the Hammond Research Station Nov. 9 to 11. Sessions will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday.  Friday’s class will end at 1 p.m.

   “This workshop will provide essential information for conducting prescribed burns safely and legally in your timberlands,” said AgCenter forestry agent Whitney Wallace. “Instructors will be from the LSU AgCenter and the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.”

   Topics on the first two days will include fuels, fire behavior, fire weather, fire ecology, burning techniques, smoke management, fire lane establishment, burn planning and more.

   “A field exercise with a prescribed fire will be held on the second day, depending on the weather,” she said.

   The final day will cover Louisiana’s Certified Prescribed Burner Program. LDAF personnel will be on hand to provide burner certification.

   “The class, passing an exam and burning experience are required for certification,” Wallace said. “The workshop will be limited to the first 20 applicants. Long-sleeve shirts, pants and closed-toed shoes are recommended for this workshop.”

   The registration fee is $110 per person if received by Nov. 1 and $160 thereafter. The fee covers lunches, refreshments, handouts and supplies.

   The Hammond Research Station is located at 21549 Old Covington Highway in Hammond.
